Why Real Online Timer exists

Real Online Timer started from a simple, repeated annoyance: most browser-based countdown timers quietly lose accuracy the moment you switch tabs, minimize the window, or lock your phone. Browsers deliberately throttle JavaScript timers running in the background to save battery, and a timer built the naive way — just counting a number down once a second — drifts because of it. You'd come back to a timer that claimed 3 minutes were left when actually zero were.

This site fixes that the straightforward way: instead of counting down, it calculates the exact clock time the countdown should reach zero the moment you press Start, and re-checks the real time against that target every time the display updates. Nothing accumulates, so there's nothing to drift — whether the tab's been backgrounded for ten seconds or an hour.

Beyond accuracy, the goal is to stay out of your way: no account, no download, no paywall, and — as described in full on the Privacy Policy — no data collected about you or how you use it. Your durations, alarm sound, theme, and custom presets are saved in your own browser's local storage, never sent anywhere.

The site currently offers four visual styles (Simple, Big Timer, Visual Timer, and Hourglass), fullscreen mode for presentations and classrooms, five alarm sounds with adjustable volume, and dedicated pages for common durations and use cases — study sessions, workouts, cooking, meetings, and more — so whatever you're timing, there's a version of the timer tuned for it.
